While climate change is characterised as a global problem, as architects we are tasked with responding to changing climates locally and specifically. For architects climate is a generator of cultural and design possibilities that suggests how diverse populations could interact with their surroundings. The landscapes of Australia, Malaysia, and Singapore consist of different socio-ecological environments, and these environments are quickly transforming due to rising levels of carbon emissions and increasing urbanisation. Speaking about his research, Erik L’Heureux discusses how factors like atmosphere, materials, shelter, and temperature can not only be emphasized in architectural design but also understood as significant historical and contemporary forces that have impacted permanent and transit settlements in these two regions of the world.
